Basic concepts of sociology: Society, social structure, social fact, social event, etc.; pioneers of sociology (Ibn Khaldun, A. Comte, K. Marx, E. Durkheim, M. Internal and external causes that led to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire; reform movements in the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century; ideological currents in the late Ottoman period; political and military situation of the Ottoman Empire at the beginning of the 20th century; World War I and the Armenian issue; occupation of Anatolia and reactions; Mustafa Kemal Pasha's landing in Samsun and activities; the congress period and organization; the opening of the last Ottoman Parliament and the adoption of the National Pact; preparation for the National Struggle and its material and moral foundations; the opening of the Grand National Assembly and its activities; the Treaty of Sèvres; struggles on the Southern and Eastern fronts; the establishment of the regular army, Greek offensive and battles on the Western front, signing of the Armistice of Mudanya, convening of the Lausanne Conference and signing of the Peace Treaty.

Paragraph forms and structure; technical features of the paragraph; paragraph analysis; creating a paragraph outline; producing texts in descriptive, comparative, argumentative and narrative genres, writing summaries, interpretation; writing short stories, review essays (on books and/or films) and formal/informal letters.

 

ELT105 Listening and Pronunciation 1 (2-0)2 ECTS: 2

Analysis of authentic listening materials and speech chunks from different contexts; phonemic transcription of sound differences and problematic sounds are also covered; higher-order listening skills; basic listening and speaking skills such as vowels, consonants, word stress and intonation and phonemic transcription exercises are practiced.

Developing the ability to communicate orally using appropriate expressions and strategies for various oral communication situations; developing the ability to effectively express feelings and thoughts through conversation, presentation and discussion activities; developing speaking and listening comprehension skills using current, authentic, audio and audio-visual materials.

Exercises in making inferences using inductive and deductive reasoning and grasping implied meaning; being able to comprehend direct and indirect, literal and figurative meanings by examining information in reading texts; conveying personal opinions on read texts briefly in oral and written form; understanding the fact that the meaning derived by the reader and the meaning intended by the author may differ.

The elective music course aims for the student to gain a general culture. First, art and aesthetics concepts are discussed with the student and their definitions are made, ensuring the student receives basic knowledge about the definition of art. The student is informed about the structure of music through the history and origins of the musical art. At the same time, by having the student listen to works from ancient times to the present, the student is ensured to acquire this culture through listening. Western music and Turkish music forms and structures are discussed and the necessary notes are given to students. Listening sessions are conducted on songs, folk songs, religious music and basic Turkish music concepts. Students are given notes on Turkish Folk Music, Turkish Classical Music and Turkish Religious Music. Western music's basic forms of Opera, Sonata and Symphonic music are introduced to students by listening, and notes containing basic definitions are shared with students.
